Elmina Castle-Central Region
Designated by UNESCO as world heritage site, Elmina Castle was built in 1482 which holds more of events about Ghana’s and West African colonial and slave trade history. Experience and view the “door of no return”.(The door through which slaves were loaded onto ships).
Cape Coast Castle- Central Region
The Dutch built Cape Coast as a lodge in1630 on an abandoned lodge built by the Portuguese in 1555.Forts built by Swedish 1653. Extensively rebuilt 1757-80. An Anglican minister established the first primary school at Cape Coast in 1750.
In 1870, the West Indians Regiments, formed entirely of slaves were fought from the Caribbean to the Ashanti and other African tribes who had restricted the British. Want to explore more?
Christiansburg Castle-Accra
Also called Osu castle, A Portuguese fortified house, 1500. Swedish lodge built in 1652.Danish stone fort in 1661.Sold to Portuguese 1679 and then resold to Danish in 1693. Again it was sold to the British in1850. It was rebuilt and used as a residence of the British Governor of Gold Coast, 1877-1957. Renamed Government House in1957; became the official residence of Dr.Kwame Nkrumah (first President), and has since remained the seat of Government.
Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum- Accra
